What Material Traceability Should Look Like in a Project Order

Traceability connects incoming material, manufacturing records, testing and final product identification.

For pressure-piping components, traceability is not a single certificate added at shipment. It is a controlled chain of identification and records maintained from material receipt through manufacturing, inspection, marking and release.

The traceability chain

A practical traceability system links the raw-material heat or batch to the production order and final component. Identification must remain controlled when material is cut, formed, heat treated, machined or divided into smaller lots.

  • Incoming material identification and certificates
  • Production order and process route
  • Heat-treatment and test records
  • Final marking, inspection release and packing list

Match records to the purchase specification

The documentation package should reflect the agreed standard and inspection plan. Certificate type, test results, marking content and traceability level need to be defined during technical review rather than assumed after production.

Control transfers and re-marking

Whenever original identification could be separated from the material, a controlled transfer method is needed. The process should prevent mixed heats and preserve the link between the component and its supporting records.

Review the final dossier as a system

Before shipment, confirm that quantities, heat numbers, product markings, inspection reports and packing records reconcile. The exact documentation scope must follow the purchase order, applicable standard and approved inspection plan.
